Steel Corrosion: The Silent Destroyer of Industrial Projects and How to Stop It
Corrosion is not merely an aesthetic defect. For industrial enterprises, engineering firms, and construction projects, it represents a significant financial risk and a safety hazard. Weakened structures and the necessity for premature repairs cost the industry billions annually. However, with the correct technological procedure, corrosion can not only be slowed down but almost entirely halted. At FK system – povrchové úpravy s.r.o., we offer bespoke comprehensive system solutions for both stainless and carbon steel.
What Exactly is Corrosion? (And Why Steel is So Prone to It)
To defeat the enemy, you must first understand them. Steel exists in nature in the form of ore – that is, in compounds. Corrosion is essentially the material's natural tendency to return to its original, natural state. When unprotected steel comes into contact with oxygen and moisture, oxidation begins, brittle crumbling rust forms, and structural integrity is lost. If the surface is not sealed in time and to a high standard, nature will reclaim the product.
Most Common Types of Corrosion
1. Uniform Corrosion
The most common form, where the surface rusts extensively and evenly. It is easily detectable and usually indicates missing or poor-quality surface treatment.
2. Pitting Corrosion
An insidious form typical for stainless steels. Only small dots are visible on the surface, but the damage progresses deep into the material, which can lead to sudden structural failure.
3. Galvanic Corrosion
Occurs at the point of contact between two different metals (e.g., aluminium and steel) in a humid environment, where the less noble metal degrades rapidly.

How to Win the Battle: Pickling and Passivation
Many companies focus solely on the final painting. However, if the substrate is not perfectly clean, the paint merely covers a problem that continues to fester underneath. At FK system, we utilize processes that resolve the problem at its depth.
Step 1: Pickling (The Perfect Clean)
Whether it is stainless or carbon steel, the first step is the same. We must remove everything that does not belong on the metal.
Step 2: Passivation (The Protective Shield)
The passivation process strengthens the thin, invisible oxide layer that "seals" the material against environmental influences. This significantly increases the material's level of resistance to corrosion.
Step 3: Blasting and Painting (For Maximum Durability and Final Appearance)
To achieve the longest possible service life or a specific appearance, we continue with mechanical treatment.
Step 1: Pickling (The Perfect Clean)
Whether it is stainless or carbon steel, the first step is the same. We must remove everything that does not belong on the metal.
- Process: Pickling chemically removes mill scale, rust, heat tint from welding, and microscopic impurities.
- Result: We achieve a so-called "metallically clean surface" with an open structure, ready for the subsequent passivation.
- Blasting: Provides the surface with the required roughness and hardening. This creates the ideal substrate for the subsequent application of paints.
- Wet Painting: The application of highly durable coating materials onto a chemically clean and blasted surface to ensure a service life spanning decades.
Do Not Underestimate the Protection of Your Investments
Every day without protection shortens the lifespan of steel. At FK system – povrchové úpravy s.r.o., we focus on prevention. We possess the technologies for both high-volume and specialized orders, ensuring that the surface of your parts leaves production in the highest quality.
